50 kVA Hybrid Solar + 100 kWh BESS (Bidirectional Metering) | Procurement Phase

URPC is delivering a fully engineered 50 kVA hybrid power system for the GOHA feeds manufacturing facility in Kawempe, Kampala, combining rooftop solar generation with a 100 kWh lithium battery energy storage system (BESS) to stabilise supply, reduce energy cost, and improve operational continuity.

Solution Architecture

• Rooftop PV deployed on the factory roof to displace daytime grid consumption and reduce the blended cost of power
• 100 kWh BESS configured for both resilience and tariff optimisation
• Bidirectional metering to enable controlled import/export measurement and hybrid settlement logic (subject to applicable utility requirements)
• Hybrid operating logic designed to support power quality and lower interruption exposure for production-critical loads

Operating Strategy (Tariff-Optimised Hybrid)

To support a bill-neutral commercial outcome, the system is configured to:
• Charge the BESS during off-peak hours (00:00–06:00) using grid import where applicable
• Discharge/export during peak periods to reduce peak-cost exposure and support operational stability
• Use rooftop PV to cover daytime load and support partial battery charging when available

This approach reduces the requirement for oversized dedicated PV solely to charge the battery, while still delivering reliable hybrid performance and measurable savings through tariff arbitrage and peak management.
                                                     Indicative cost: UGX 239,700,000

Expected outcomes for the client

• Lower monthly energy cost through peak reduction and optimised charge/discharge scheduling
• Improved operational continuity through ride-through capability and smoother voltage behaviour
• Reduced diesel exposure (where generators exist) by shifting gensets to last-resort backup
