NO-IMAGE

KCC Partnership Pilot

URPC is progressing a Market Trader Cluster Pilot in collaboration with Kampala City Council (KCC) and selected microfinance institutions, designed to provide reliable, affordable power to groups of traders and micro-enterprises operating in high-throughput market environments. The model is built around a shared solar PV + battery storage backbone that supports essential productive-use loads, with transparent billing and governance suitable for market entities and city-led programmes.

What the Pilot Delivers

• Shared PV + BESS supply sized for clustered essential loads (lighting, security, POS/ICT, and small refrigeration where applicable)
• Tenant-level metering and governance to support fair allocation of consumption and reduce leakages
• Improved voltage stability and fewer interruptions, reducing appliance damage and business downtime
• Reduced diesel dependency for traders currently relying on small generators

Delivery Model (KCC + Microfinance Enablement)

• KCC-enabled site access and stakeholder coordination to support market-level implementation and governance
• Microfinance-enabled affordability pathway to reduce adoption friction for SMEs and trader groups, aligned with transparent consumption and payment discipline
• URPC provides the technical platform, monitoring, and maintenance framework to protect performance and revenue integrity

Expected Outcomes

• Extended trading hours and improved customer experience
• Lower energy cost volatility and reduced generator operating expense
• Improved safety and security through reliable lighting and surveillance loads
• A scalable template that can be replicated across multiple markets under KCC oversight

Status:
