Right-Sized Solar + BESS for Small Production Sites | KCC + Microfinance Pilot (Pipeline)
URPC is progressing an SME Workshop Hybrid Pilot in collaboration with Kampala City Council (KCC) and selected microfinance institutions, targeting small production and artisan sites where power interruptions and voltage instability directly reduce output, damage tools, and disrupt delivery schedules.
This pilot is designed to prove a repeatable model for productive-use electrification across clusters of workshops—fabrication, welding, carpentry, machining, block making micro-lines, and similar SME operations.
• Right-sized PV + BESS hybrid system engineered around workshop duty cycles and tool start-up loads
• Essential-load prioritisation to keep core circuits running (lighting, sockets, ICT, security) while managing high-draw tools safely
• Power-quality focused design (protection coordination, earthing discipline, surge/lightning protection) to reduce nuisance trips and protect equipment
• Monitoring and performance reporting to support operational discipline and future scale-up
• KCC-enabled site access and stakeholder coordination to support market-level implementation and governance
• Microfinance-enabled affordability pathway to reduce adoption friction for SMEs and trader groups, aligned with transparent consumption and payment discipline
• URPC provides the technical platform, monitoring, and maintenance framework to protect performance and revenue integrity
• More predictable working hours and improved order delivery performance
• Reduced generator usage and maintenance burden
• Lower tool/equipment failure rates due to improved voltage behaviour
• A scalable template for wider SME workshop rollouts under a city-supported microproductivity programme
Pipeline pilot under URPC’s Microproductivity and SME Solutions portfolio, delivered in partnership with KCC and microfinance institutions.
